DAY OF THE DEAD & HALLOWEEN LOOKS

DAY OF THE DEAD

Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico. The holiday focuses on gatherings of families and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died and help support their spiritual journey. Sugar skulls are a big part of this tradition and this week in class we were asked to create our own sugar skull design to do on a partner. Unfortunately, I didn't get time in class to do it on a partner so I came home and did one on myself. I kept to a dark colour scheme of black and red because it is around halloween and they are halloween themed colours. I researched a lot about the sugar skulls before designing my own and found that a lot of them have random patterns and swirls on the forehead and cheeks so I included them in my design.

The first thing i did was prime my face with the illamasqua satin primer. I then covered half of my face in white illamasqua skin base. I only did half of my face because I wanted to see the difference. I then used a thin real techniques brush to create a circle around my eye which i then filled in using the black from the kryolan supracolour palette. I then made little circle thrills around the outside of the circle and filled them in using the red from the supra colour palette. I then used the thing brush and coloured in my nose to look like a skulls. I followed that by colouring my lips in black and drew on a skull like mouth along my cheeks. The chin looked bare and so did the forehead to I designed a couple of patterns and shapes which would fill in the gaps, also using the black and red supracolour.

I was really happy with how my final look turned out, although i realised after id taken the makeup off that i had forgot to colour in the shape on the forehead in red. But the look still looks effective without it. If i were to change anything it would be to leave the black to dry around the eyes before filling in the thrills in red. The black started to smudge in with the red making the red darker than i wanted it to be. However, it isn't really noticeable and i am still really happy with the final outcome.

MY HALLOWEEN MAKEUP LOOK

1ST LOOK

My first halloween look was this skull design. I looked up videos about how to create a skull look on youtube and found one that i liked. I barely used any products apart from the supracolour palette and a black pencil eyeliner. I covered my face in the white supra colour with a bit of illamasqua white base mixed in to make it more watery and useable. I used the black supracolour to create the eye, nose and teeth shapes. To create the shadowy effect I used a thin brush and made thin lines where i wanted the shadows to be, which i then smudged out using my finger. I also used this technique to smudge the bottom and tops of the teeth to give them more of a 3d look. The only problem i came across whilst creating this look was that the black supracolour seemed to wipe away on the eyelids from when i opened my eyes. It was barely noticeable but i knew it was there so it annoyed me. But over all i am really happy with the outcome of this look and I got a lot of compliments on it when i went out with it on.

2ND LOOK

My second look was this mortal kombat inspired design. This isn't the best picture but It is basically a creepy mouth look. I first started off my doing a normal evening look on my eyes and applied my everyday foundation. I then began the mouth look by drawing an outline of where i wanted the mouth to be placed. I then used the kryolan supra-colour palette in white to create teeth shapes in the mouth outline. I then used the black again to go around the outside of the teeth shapes to make them clearer. I then filled in between each tooth with the black supra colour. Then i used the red supracolour and made a gum-like shape underneath each tooth. Next i used a yellow colour to paint on top of the teeth to make them look as though they are dirty and uncleaned, whilst also dragging down the red colour to make it look bloody. I then used a damp brush to blend out the gums to make them less sharp. Then, i used a little bit of black to blend in with the red to give it almost a shadow look to make it more realistic. Finally, i dripped fake blood all over the mouth to make it look scarier. I was really happy with how the final look turned out but if i were to do it again i would use different products because it didn't come out as bright as i wanted it to.
