ALEXANDER MCQUEEN: AUTUMN/WINTER 15-16

"That moment when a rose is on the verge of decay, when the petals turn floppy, soft and crinkled is, says Sarah Burton, a beautiful thing."

The 2015-16 Autumn/Winter show was staged at the Conciergerie in Paris, the vaulted chambers where Marie Antoinette was imprisoned before being beheaded.

"Piled up 18th century hair, powdered faces and Miss Havisham tiered lace fishtail gowns that buttoned all the way up to Victorian collars added to the dark romance."

"Sarah Burton clearly had floral ideas on her mind when she came up with collection".

MAKEUP AND HAIR

The hair in this collection was frizzed, very textured and pinned up in a circular shape to make it voluminous and big. All of the models hairs were the same no matter the length, colour, texture or style of it. It really reflects the theme of the whole collection, the messy textured look really relates to decay but in a beautiful way. It also relates to Elizabethan hairstyles because of how textures it is and the style it has been pinned up in.

The makeup also relates to Elizabethan beauty. The skin has been made extremely pale with a hint of pink on the cheeks. The eyebrows have been whited out and on some models have had a little bit of gold brushed through. The lips have also been given a really natural pale pink colour to them, making it look as though they have nothing on them - similarly to the Elizabethans. They have also been given white lashes and their waterlines have been lined with white. This not only makes them more pale, but opens up there eyes making them look bigger than they actually are. Finally, they eyelids have been given a light gold shadow which also relates to how Elizabethans would look as gold is the colour of wealth.

The last aspect of the collection that I noticed related to the Elizabethans were the clothes. The items had features that were very historical including: High necks, frills and a very specific colour scheme. The main colours in the collection included blacks, whites, nudes, golds and some reds. The materials used also relate to Elizabethan clothing. Lace was used a lot and so were feathers. I also noticed a lot of pearls on the clothing - black and white ones. Queen Elizabeth herself was known for wearing pearls and so were any upper class Elizabethan women so this really relates to that.
